Charges for Non-NHS Services (Private Charges) Explained
Why do GP’s charge fees? Your questions answered.
Isn’t the NHS supposed to be free?
The NHS provides most healthcare free of charge, but some services fall outside of NHS funding. Examples include:
- Medical reports for insurance companies
- Claim forms for private care
- Letters or forms that require GPs to review medical records
These services are not part of the NHS and therefore incur a fee.
Aren’t GPs already being paid by the NHS?
GPs are not NHS employees—they are self-employed.
- NHS funding only covers specific NHS work.
- Non-NHS services require additional fees to cover costs like staff salaries, building maintenance, and utilities.
What services are covered by the NHS, and what are private?
NHS-covered services:
- Medical care provided to NHS patients
Non-NHS services (fees apply):
For NHS patients:
- Travel vaccinations (certain types)
- Private medical insurance reports
- Holiday cancellation claim forms
- Private care referral forms
- Letters/forms requested by patients
For third parties:
- Insurance company medical reports
- Some DSS/Benefits agency reports
- Local authority employee examinations
Why does it take time to complete forms?
Completing forms and reports requires careful attention. GPs must:
- Dedicate time away from patient care
- Thoroughly review your medical records to ensure accuracy
With increasing paperwork demands and a busy workload, completing forms may take longer than expected.
Why is a GP’s signature more than “just a signature”?
When a GP signs a form, they are legally confirming its accuracy. To do so, they must:
- Carefully review your entire medical record
- Ensure all information is correct to avoid serious consequences
Do GPs have to complete non-NHS work?
No, GPs are not obligated to perform non-NHS work, except in limited cases (e.g., confirming unfitness for jury duty). While they will try to help, GPs may not always be able to prioritise non-NHS requests.
How long will it take to process my request?
- Requests are usually completed within 28 days. The requester will be notified when the report is ready so please do not chase before this time.
- If you wish to expedite your request this comes at an additional cost of £30.
You may also wish to explore private medical companies for assistance.
